Bunker 13 – Poland

I also went to Mamerki to visit another site, Bunker No.13. Located around 15km to the north of the Wolf’s lair, it was a nice ride through the countryside with lots of beautiful scenery. The complex comprises of large two bunkers about 1km apart. Bunker 13 was used between 1940 and 1944 as forward operations centre, housing around 1500 officers and soldiers. The bunker remained undamaged as the Nazis did not have time to blow up shelters when they retreated in 1945.

These days it’s a private museum and to be honest, its mostly a collection of artifacts, though they have made a lot of effort to provide good information. But, its still worth the visit just to walk around the bunkers and try to get a feel for what it was like in the 1940’s. Most of all, it’s definitely worth the £5 entrance fee.

Not far from the Wolf’s Lair there is also a small museum with several aircraft, to be honest was a bit naff, but at a fiver a pop I can’t really complain. Again, its just a collection of artifacts – BUT – I did get to sit in the cockpit of a Mig-21, so for me it was definitely worth the £5.

One thing that I just cant get enough of in Poland is – Klopsiki. I find it in the big supermarkets and its just meatballs in a basic tomato sauce, but I think its delicious. I’ve had it nearly every day and I’ll be sad to leave Poland as I wont be able to find any more Klopsiki.
