Castel de Ferro to Gibraltar

Well, yesterday morning I hobbled around and discovered that my ankle can hold my weight. So…as time waits for no man I decided its time to continue with my journey so I got out my knife and removed the cast from my ankle. It didn’t take me long to pack and load up the bike and after a celebratory breakfast I was on the road and heading west. I felt so happy to be moving again.

Freedom..!

I took the most direct route, which meant major roads and motorways. I didnt want to add any stress to my ankle by having to navigate through towns and villages with lots of gear changes so I kept it simple by taking the easy roads.  The riding was great with a big blue sky and a temperature of around 23 degrees, and the ankle felt really good too. I’m now able to put my weight on my foot without any problems and although I can move my foot up and down for gear-changes, it’s still a little bit sore if I have to make too many gear changes. But I can ride my bike…!

The journey from Castel de Ferro was around 250km and now I’m at a beautiful campsite about 5 km north of Gibraltar – Camping la Casita Cadiz. It’s so lush and sogreen as it’s surrounded by zillions of trees. Best of all, it’s quiet and so peaceful. It’s 22eu a night and has alot of fascilities – such as toilets, showers, laundry, bar and eatery plus a swimming pool… I did attempt at going for a swim, but venturing to the swimming pool in my shorts and flip-flops I found that the heating had been turned off as its out of season – and it was icy cold. I ended up reclining by the pool and reading my kindle under the late summer sunshine.

The ankle seems fine but I’m going to rest-up for a few more days before I go any further. If I’ve got any problems with the ankle then I can pop into Gibraltar and visit the hospital, but if the ankle keeps on improving, then either later this week or early next week I’ll be morocco-bound.
