Goodbye Corsica

For the past few days I’ve been at Saint Florent, on the north coast of Corsica. The campsite was great. Opposite the campsite was a beach and the deep blue sea. I did dip my toes in the seawater but it was a tad too cold for me. I’ve been around the local aria and I’ve also visited the lovely town of Bastia, with its old town, old fort and bustling town centre.

I’ve also caught a cold. My nose is like a tap, I’m coughing like I smoke 40 a day, get the shivers and then start sweating like Price Andrew at a Pizza Party… I don’t know where I’ve caught it but it’s knocked me for six. I went for a ride yesterday but my heart wasn’t in it so I came back and just lazed around for the rest of the day. I even bought a big bag of Haribo yesterday but they’re untouched.

I left my campsite quite late today, and with feeling of regret that I’d probably left Corsica a few days too early, I headed west over the mountains to I’ll Rouse to catch a ferry but first I went to the small town of Calvi for my some lunch.

Calvi is one of those lovely little towns where there was a fort high overlooking the harbour and then the town grew around it. One of the beautiful things about it being October is that it’s now the ‘off’ season so there are very few people about.

After a break I headed back towards I’ll Rouse and had two hours to kill before my ferry, so parking up next to the main town square, I bought a cold drink and two slices of pizza from a nearby boulangerie, then found a shaded bench to read my kindle and watch several old men playing boules. After a while a German guy on an old Suzuki 550 rolled-up with the same idea as was also killing time before the ferry. He was 72 and a retired pilot. He’d been here since June and was riding his bike back to Germany. Just goes to show that age is just a number…

The ferry gets into Marseille tomorrow morning and after that… I was going to wander around the south of France for a few days but there is going to be some serious rain over the next three to four days in the south of France and northern Spain so I’m going to head south towards Barcelona and hide in the sunshine for a week or so…
