Hello Corsica – Bonifacio

A few days ago I caught the ferry from the northern tip of Sardinia over to Corsica. The ferry arrived at Bonifacio, and it’s one heck of an experience as the ferry enters the port. As you approach Bonifacio the high cliffs are sculpted into strange shapes due to the erosion by the wind and the sea over millions of years, and then to get into the port, the ferry has to squeeze through a narrow entrance with these sculpted cliffs towering high above the ferry on both sides. It’s an amazing experience.

Once the ferry makes a tight right turn into the harbour, the ship has to turn 180 degrees so it can back-into the loading ramp. A remarkable bit of seamanship. Once you exit the ferry you then have to gingerly drive through the town, all the time stopping while waiters dash left and right to the waterside eateries.

I was planning to stay at a campsite just outside the town so I stopped and had a look but it looked like a refugee camp so I opted for Plan B and headed to another campsite about 5km outside the town – which in all honestly was the best thing to do because Camping de La Trinite was superb. Lots of space, grass, trees plus great washing and shower facilities. I was really glad I ended up on this campsite. I paid 15eu a night to stay here.

I spent a day just riding around the area and then another day in Bonifacio, walking to the fort at the top of the entrance to the harbour as well as meandering through the narrow and bustling streets of the old town. It really is a nice place to visit.
