Hello Sardinia

DAY ONE. The ferry arrived in Cagliari at 10am the next morning and by the time I managed to find my bike – because I went to the wrong deck – it was 1030 before I got off. I was going to park up in Cagliari and have a wonder around but it’s always a risk leaving your bike when it’s fully loaded. Also, there were several cruise ships alongside and roadworks around the centre, so knowing it was going to be busy in the ciry plus hassle trying to park-up I decided to plod-on and head north west.

I had no definite plan but I’d seen an island that looked interesting so that’s where I headed for: Saint’ Antioco. It’s connected to the mainland by a causeway and it took around an hour to get there. First I visited the main town of Saint’ Antioco and then headed for Calasetta, which is a small village to the north of the island. After that I crossed back to the mainland and headed north along the cost.

As the day was getting late, and although there was a campsite about 30k away, I decided to wild-camp and found a place in a small forest next to the coast, just north of Portixeddu. It was next to a beach with a warm gentle wind blowing inland, and as the sun went down, I had to pinch myself to see if I wasn’t having a daydream…!

DAY TWO. It was so quiet overnight and I had a great sleep, waking up quite late. After breakfast, a mug of tea and a small bit of video I got back in the road. First I headed inland and into the mountains, riding in a semi-circle east, then north and then west to get back on the coast. It was a superb afternoon going up and down the mountains and round and round the hundreds of bends. By the time I got the coast again I almost felt dizzy.

By the late afternoon it was 30 degrees and although there was a campsite further along the coast, I couldn’t be bothered with the hassle so decided to wild-camp again. I found a place next to the sea about 2km north of Funtana Meiga, and as I’m sat here tapping this out on my phone, there is a gentle warm wind blowing inland and I can hear the sound of the water lapping into the shore. You know, life can’t get any better some days.!

Sardinia is really nice. If you want bright lights and noise – then Sardinia is not the place for you. It’s quiet, very rural but most of all, beautiful in its own way. It’s the kind of place you come to if you want peace and quiet, nice scenery and lots of sunshine…of which is has in abundance.
