Lake Ohrid – Albania

I left the campsite at Shumbat this morning and headed to the south of Albania. It was only a short ride of about 150kms and it took about three hours, including a couple of small breaks.

I had a really good couple of days in Shumbat, even managing to launder all my clothes as they had a washing machine. There was a Restaurant next to the campsite and I ate there twice, and both times I couldn’t finish the colossal amount food. I think they were trying to kill me… I almost felt like staying a few days more, but time marches on as they say.

Going south from Schumbat the landscape is full of green and rolling hills, but before long I was climbing the mountains again to go through the Shebenik National Park. Once I got off the main highway I was expecting an old road but it’s got new tarmac, which meant an enthusiastic ride for many happy miles…

In the early afternoon I came down off the mountains towards Lake Ohrid, which is a huge lake which has North Macedonia to the east and Albania to the west. I was heading for Tushemist, which is on the southern shore of the lake. I knew there were some campsites here, and I soon found a small campsite with lots of shade and a small cafe. Also, just across the road opposite the campsite is a the lake plus huge beach – with free sunshades and loungers.

I could have headed into Greece today, as where I want to go is only another 150kms away, but I need to change my LEK’s back into Euro’s. Albania is still a cash society and very few places accept cards, so when I arrived I erred on the side of caution and got more LEK’s than I actually needed, which is why I want to change money back into Euro’s. As it’s Sunday the banks are closed so I’m just going to have to spend some time on the beach instead. What an utter blow… 😉
