Today I rode from Germany to Belgium – and what an exciting day. The quick route according to my satnav was about 120 miles but I decided to do a bit of a zig zag through Germany, Luxembourg and Belgium using the B-roads. I ended up doing around 250 miles through some amazing roads with zillions of twisty bits. At one stage I had to stop and have a rest as it was tiring doing hairpin after hairpin.
Love or hate the TomTom Rider 550, when you set it to choose a route with twisty bits it never fails to live up to to its expectations and the route it took me on was just perfect. I’ve not had so much fun for a long while, but it was also a bit of a challenge trying to convince a heavily laden V-strom into some pretty tight corners. But she did everything that was asked of her and she performed faultlessly all day without as much as a grumble.
And you know the strangest thing…? I never saw another bike today. All these wonderful roads with zillions of twisties and I never saw another bike. They must be all at work… The scenery while I rode from Germany into Luxembourg and then Belgium was stunning, especially coming through the Ardennes Forest and the little villages. I definitely want to come back here and ride more of these roads.
The temperature today was around 14 degrees when I started this morning but it got warmer in the afternoon and when i got to my campsite the temperature was 16 degrees – with glorious sunshine. I’m now at my campsite just outside Bastogne, which was the scene of bitter fighting in December 1944 during the Battle of the Bulge. It was a long day and I’m tuckered-out after todays ride. I’ve had my brew and now I’m contemplating my stomach and what to fill it with. I’m here now for four or five days as there’s lots of things I want to see in the area, especially the museums. And thankfully, the one I wanted to see is not far away. That was lucky…! Bon Bon…!
