Schwerin in Northern Germany

And today I’m doing some culture, and I’m starting at a wee place called Schwerin. And very grand, indeed… Central to all this is Schloss Schwerin, a monumental building of Dutch inspiration and finished in true German style. It was started in 1635 and over the years grew and grew in stature and splendour until is was finished in 1857.

In its present form, it was intended as a palace for The grand Duke Franz IV, but he did not use it for long as he gave it to the state in 1918. Over the years it was used as a hospital in WW2 and since then it has become a training college and of course, a museum. It was Sunday and most of Germany closes on a Sunday – which isn’t a bad thing – so I also had a walk around the town, which has a unique combination of modern Germany, with some small elements of traditional architecture.

I also had a great ice cream there. Vanilla and it was huge. I asked for a large-one, because in the UK you ask for a large ice and its not so large, so expecting the same I asked for a large ice and got a huge ice-cream. It only cost 2.5 euro’s too. So after my vanilla ice, and a coffee, I got on the road again to see more of this beautiful part of Germany.
