A Sunny Ride to Kilchoan.

It was a lazy morning today, as it was nice and sunny so I took my time with breakfast and driking my tea, while I admired the beautiful view. I’ve been here for two nights, so I’m going to head north.

Leaving Ardfern, I joined the A816 which takes you into Oban. The A816 from Kintraw to Oban is a superb biking road. Superb, and one of the best roads in the area. There’s some straights but most of it is bendy bits, plus it’s good tarmac so it was a joy to ride this stretch of road. Add a few extra revs for the bends and even shave a bit of metal from my foot pegs – it’s a recipe for a big smile..

Oban, as usual, was full of day trippers and cars. It’s always like this when the weather is nice, and who can blame them. I was going to stop for some chips but the bike bay near the bus station was full so I carried on and headed for Fort William.

Not long after Oban I caught up a group of about 8 riders on big bikes so I played along with them for a while, and when they stopped for fuel I carried on to the Ferry at Corran. This short five-minute ferry takes you across to Clovullin, and if you are going to the southern part of the peninsula – it saves you a big ride from Fort William.

From Clovullin heading west it’s about 90 minutes of riding along single lane roads to Strontian, Salen and then Kilchoan. There are two campsites at Kilchoan and I always use the one further up the road at Ardnamurchan – as the showers are piping hot and it’s a beautiful view.

I don’t like VW campervans. Two reasons: the side door makes a whoop-bang noise when you close the door, and the owners seem incapable of being able to close the door quietly. Because space on the site was limited I had to camp next to two of them, so I had no option. Grrrrrr….

Overall it’s been a great day with some great weather. I love this part of the world because it’s so peaceful and the air is very mild. As for tomorrow..? Who knows. Maybe Mull.
